Lumley Castle Wedding Styling Inspiration | Fairytale Durham Castle Wedding
If you've grown up dreaming of a fairytale wedding, it's hard to imagine a venue more magical than Lumley Castle. Nestled just outside Durham, this iconic castle wedding venue offers everything couples could wish for: grand interiors, historic character and an atmosphere that feels straight out of a storybook.
Danni and Mark embraced the romance of a castle wedding from the very beginning, creating a celebration that perfectly complemented the setting at Lumley Castle. From the rich red accents and enchanting decor to the entertainment and elegant details, every part of their day felt as though it had been lifted from the pages of a fairytale.
Romantic Ceremony Styling in Lumley Castle's Baron's Hall
For their ceremony in the magnificent Baron's Hall, Danni and Mark wanted a look that enhanced the drama and grandeur of the castle while still feeling intimate and romantic.
The aisle chairs were dressed with luxurious red satin sashes, creating a striking contrast against the historic surroundings. To frame the ceremony space, they chose my Evie Foliage Canopy Trees, complete with delicate hanging LED tea lights. In a room as impressive as Baron's Hall, the canopy trees added softness and a touch of whimsical elegance while naturally drawing attention to the couple as they exchanged their vows.
The aisle itself was lined with glass vases and LED candles, helping to create a warm, inviting glow throughout the space. Danni also provided floral arrangements that perfectly coordinated with the deep red tones used throughout the styling, tying every detail together beautifully.
The addition of the hanging tea lights remains one of my favourite touches from this wedding. Against the backdrop of Lumley Castle's historic stone walls, they created an atmosphere that was both dramatic and incredibly romantic.
A Groom Wearing His Heart on His Sleeve
I didn't get the opportunity to meet Danni before the ceremony, but I did spend some time with Mark that morning.
After years of working at weddings across Durham and the North East, Mark stands out as one of the grooms whose emotions were impossible to miss. He was so invested in making sure that every detail reflected the vision he and Danni had created together.
Even without seeing them side by side before the ceremony, the way he spoke about Danni, combined with the excitement and nervous anticipation written all over his face, made it abundantly clear how much love existed between them. Their fairytale theme couldn't have been more fitting for the two of them.
A Castle Wedding Reception with Medieval Entertainment
Following the ceremony, the Evie Foliage Canopy Trees were repurposed behind the top table, demonstrating how ceremony decor can seamlessly transition into the reception space.
Guests were then treated to entertainment perfectly suited to a Durham castle wedding, including a court jester and an impressive sword fighting performance. The medieval-inspired entertainment brought Lumley Castle's fascinating history to life and delighted guests throughout the celebrations.
The beautiful wedding cake was decorated with vibrant red summer fruits, it echoed the colour palette woven throughout the day and provided the perfect finishing touch.
Wedding Styling at Lumley Castle
This wedding was such a special way to round off my 2023 season, and it was also my first opportunity to work alongside the incredibly talented photographer Hayley Crone.
